The Need To Be Needed

It may be difficult to feel needed. You may have, as Joshua Rothman wrote in this New Yorker article, a "bullshit job", where you are needed just to ask AI what to do, and then tell a different AI what to do.

I know not everyone has free time; but if you have, and you worry you are not really needed, may I suggest searching for volunteering opportunities? I believe I can safely assure you that there are still many needs to distribute in this world, and that these are not "bullshit".

It will be rewarding to feel needed. Even if it is 'just' every Saturday afternoon. Or one Sunday morning every month. Or whenever.

Joshua Rothman, New Yorker:

Will A.I. really take our jobs? Will scientific and economic developments actually render the traditional human way of life obsolete? Maybe (hopefully!) not. But even the possibility of such outcomes wounds us. How can we insist upon—and really feel the existence of—our necessity, when so many forces seek to minimize it?
