Just Finished Reading: Vicious, by V. E. Schwab
I am not a superhero comics reader, and I am not familiar with the genre. But I do watch many of the recent (recent? the first Iron Man that started off the long run of superhero movies was 18 years ago.) MCU movies. The strength of all these Marvel movies is that they are all set in the same universe, allowing characters and story lines to interact each other. Unfortunately, the weakness of all these Marvel movies is also that they are all set in the same universe, which probably contributed to a lot of the sameness across so many characters and stories.
Vicious, by V. E. Schwab, is a superhero story. (Just like Unbreakable is also a superhero story.) Okay, maybe not exactly superhero, because in 'real life' there are no heroes and villains, there are no black and white, only shades of gray. (Oops. Wrong series.) This story is also dark -- not Batman's dark, but a world where you can't find any purely good people underneath their surfaces, and everything is motivated by bad thoughts.
It's a pity that Hollywood's superhero movies are so lacking in variety, that everything must be in the same universe with the same stories. There are so many other stories that one can tell, and V. E. Schwab tells a very interesting story here.
